Discover how Computer Vision technology is streamlining the evaluation of diseases like psoriasis
Psoriasis, a skin condition affecting half a million Argentinians and over 60 million people worldwide (1), has presented a challenging process for dermatologists when it comes to determining its severity. Now, thanks to Health Logic, a group of Argentine entrepreneurs advised by specialists, and with the support of their technological partner etermax AI Labs, Fast PASI emerges—a application that employs artificial intelligence to determine the severity of psoriasis with a simple photo on a mobile phone, streamlining and enhancing diagnostics.
Computer Vision: Artificial Intelligence as a Dermatologists’ Ally
Among the most utilized methods by dermatologists to assess the severity of psoriasis, the traditional Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) stands out. This method visually determines the percentage of the body affected using the palm of the hand. Then, through a meticulous observation of the lesions, an attempt is made to define values to calculate the PASI, a complex process that is subject to the physician’s evaluation.
Fast PASI, on the other hand, significantly simplifies this process, reducing the evaluation time to approximately 5 minutes, equivalent to an 80% reduction in time. Its operation is straightforward and intuitive: using a mobile phone, physicians can capture six photographs of the patient’s psoriasis lesions, and the artificial intelligence algorithm automatically calculates the PASI.
The algorithm has been trained by etermax AI Labs through Computer Vision technology, which employs image recognition and deep learning approaches, to analyze a wide range of photographs of patients with psoriasis. Drawing from technical expertise, the AI model has been instructed to delineate the affected body region and assess specific attributes, such as redness, thickness, and scaling of the lesions. This enables a quicker and more precise recognition and evaluation of the condition’s severity.
“The implementation of Computer Vision technology in the Fast PASI application has shown to complement the work of dermatologists, providing valuable time for more personalized and patient-centric care. Additionally, it offers great potential for assessing and monitoring various skin conditions, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, or vitiligo. This technology yields consistent and objective results while reducing the margin of error inherent in traditional method.“

The application not only expedites the evaluation of psoriasis severity but also enables closer patient monitoring over time. Thus, it contributes to enhancing quality of life and facilitating access to appropriate treatments. Moreover, Fast PASI safeguards patient privacy by securely maintaining their data.
With Fast PASI, Argentina is at the forefront of applying artificial intelligence in dermatology. This revolutionary tool highlights how the synergy between technology and medicine generates innovative solutions that enhance patient quality of life and the efficiency of healthcare professionals. The future holds promise for further advances in artificial intelligence within medicine, paving the way for more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatments for a variety of diseases.
